  • Award-winning British brand Childs Farm was the brainchild of mother of two, Joanna Jensen.

Having struggled to find baby & child toiletry products to deal with her daughters' fine hair and sensitive skin, Joanna joined forces with respected UK manufacturer Medichem to make her own.

Her criteria has always been to use as many naturally derived ingredients as possible that can do the jobs of cleaning and detangling effectively, organic essential oils that are suitable for young skin and hair, and packaging that reflects everything that Joanna holds most dear - her children, pets and animals and of course, the great British countryside all thrown together in quirky and madcap situations by children's illustrator, Emma McCall.

The wonderfully whimsical labels mean little ones want to use the products - who doesn't love ponies and tractors? - and the content is something that mums, dads and caregivers can trust and is fit for purpose. Through clinical trials, the products have proven to be suitable for even the most sensitive skin including skin prone to eczema, and are even mild enough for newborns. Every product has been dermatologically tested and approved, and paediatrician approved. And, in a recent user trial of 101 babies with eczema, 98% of their parents said they would recommend our range to other parents of children with sensitive skin.

With 1 in 5 kids under 5 in the UK suffering from eczema, we are the first range of products that can make bath time fun for everyone - even those with badly affected skin.

Childs Farm. Making everyone happy in their skin.

  • The Science Bit - Important claims & research.

All Childs Farm products are dermatologically tested under controlled clinical conditions. They use testing experts who follow an industry-approved scientific protocol that dictates the number of participants and the process by which products are evaluated. This is just good science and best practice.

The results of the research were examined by a dermatologist and a paediatrician and approved for use on newborns upwards, and on eczema-prone skin. The entire Childs Farm range was deemed mild, kind and safe for the skin. In a user trial of 103 babies with eczema and sensitive skin, 98% of the parents who tested the whole range on their babies with eczema said they would recommend these products to other parents of babies with eczema.

As with all Consumer goods, none of the components or end products are tested on animals - they are only ever tested on people.

Patch Testing: All products are formulated to be extremely gentle. What’s more, they’ve been dermatologically tested, paediatrician, approved and deemed suitable for newborns and upwards as well as eczema-prone skin. However, as a common sense precaution, we recommend a patch test be carried out at least 24 hours prior to first use. Two of the best places to test are inside of the upper arm and behind the ear. Do not perform a patch test on already irritated skin as it won’t give you an accurate reading.

Ethics and Ethos: Childhood is precious, a time full of magic as bodies and minds grow. At Childs Farm, they take the science behind all that growing and use it to make products tailored to the specific needs of children’s skin and hair. The skin is your body’s largest organ, and the smaller you are, the bigger proportion of your body it is. And like lots of our other organs, the skin continues to develop through childhood.

We start out with a thinner stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin that protects everything beneath from dehydration, stress and infection). Newborns and young children have skin with a higher water content that absorbs and loses water faster than a grown up/s. It’s not until adolescence that our sebaceous glands (the ones that produce the oily, waxy sebum that lubricates and waterproofs our skin) get going (that explains A LOT). So looking after your skin as it grows is important to keeping your body healthy.

Because we know kids get dirty (it’s more than half the fun), Childs Farm is there to help get them clean with products designed for the unique properties of children’s skin and hair.

Childs Farm products are as natural as they can make them. Mild, gentle and designed for children’s skin and hair, they REALLY work! No point in having a shampoo that makes your hair impossible to comb and leaves you looking like mice have been nesting in it. ‘As natural as your countryside’ isn’t just a strapline: it’s a principle.

Artificial Colour: Why do it? Beauty is only skin deep, and we think the product is pretty inoffensive looking as it is. Why add to it when you don't need to?

Essential Oils: These are the ingredients that put the bubble in your bath and do the tough work of washing away the day’s grime. Some plants make natural detergents – saponins – and they take advantage of Mother Nature’s hard work. Surfactants are naturally derived from beets, corn and coconut, and are Soil Association-approved. Wherever you see Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Coco-Culfate, Sucrose Laurate Alcohol, Decyl Glucoside or Coco Glucoside, you’ll know what is being used, and why.

No Sodium Lauryl Sulphate or Sodium Laureth Sulphate (also called SLS and SLES). These common synthetic detergents can cause or contribute to skin irritation in sensitive skin so by avoiding them they ensure everyone can enjoy Childs Farm. In a world where more than one in five kids suffer with eczema, we think that makes sense.

Natural Hydrators & Moisturisers: Skin needs to be properly hydrated to do its job as a barrier keeping the world out and you in. That’s why we’re supposed to drink 8 glasses of water a day. And hair?! Don’t get us started about the perils of dry hair. At Childs Farm, they rely on two natural ingredients to hydrate skin and hair: vegetable glycerine and honey. Not only do these add moisture, but they reach out and grab it from the environment, trapping it on you where it can get to work.

They also use plant-derived oils. These incredible emollients reduce the water escaping from the skin, helping it to hang on to moisture and be more elastic. All of which help the skin to do its job as a barrier to the best of its ability.

None of these products contain primary petrochemicals: no mineral oil, paraffin wax, petrolatum, or any fractions of crude oil. Little people deserve to inherit a healthy planet.

Preservatives: At Childs Farm, they use high-grade, broad-spectrum preservatives at the lowest safe concentrations, and natural preservatives (like Rosamox which comes from the same rosemary you cook with) wherever possible.

No parabens. There’s a lot of public awareness around this family of preservative ingredients. Childs Farm avoids them to give you peace of mind.

Plants make fragrant stuff to attract pollinators or put off herbivores intent on having a snack. Taking advantage of these essential oils is what gives Childs Farm its yummy smells. Aromas can have a powerful impact on how we feel, acting as real mood changers when it comes to turning a frown upside down. Essential oils also have sneaky superpowers that can help with everything from cooling and soothing skin to making hair an inhospitable environment for nits, acting as a natural biocide to lifting off the grime.

Use of organic essential oils wherever possible: skipping lightly across our planet helps to leave a healthy legacy for generations to come. Sweet orange, tangerine and peppermint oils are all organic.
